Dental Inlays & Onlays
Dental Inlays and Onlays From Our Clearwater, Florida Dentist
If you have a tooth with a partial fracture, or an advanced cavity that won’t be adequately treated with a traditional filling, we may recommend dental inlays and onlays. These procedures are similar to getting a filling, except that the inlay or onlay is constructed separately and then attached to your tooth, which is re-shaped to properly fit the inlay or onlay.
When you come in for an inlay or onlay, we will first remove the decayed or fractured portion of your tooth to make room for the inlay or onlay. We will then take an impression of your tooth, which is sent to a laboratory to create a custom-fit inlay or onlay. These are made from a wide variety of materials, typically resin, gold, or porcelain.
Once we receive your completed inlay or onlay back from the lab, we will permanently attach it in your mouth, and you’ll be free to eat and smile without any discomfort!
Dental inlay is like the name implies, more internal to your tooth. They may cover a large area of the surface, but go deeper into the body of the tooth and are used for filling a deep fracture or cavity.
A dental onlay is a surface restoration, generally of the top of the tooth. If you have a cavity that isn’t deep but spans a majority of the crown of a tooth, fillings become difficult to securely apply, and an onlay is the best approach.
Regardless of whether you need a dental inlay or onlay, our Clearwater Florida dentist will be able to tell you what treatment is best for you. If you think you need an inlay or onlay call our office at 727-373-6628 or schedule an appointment using our online form.
